Why solo travel is the ultimate adventure for your soul
Four powerful reasons to take the plunge
Travelling solo. It’s a journey through places and a deep dive into yourself.
As someone once asked me during my round-the-world trip:
What’s the best thing about going it alone?
At the time, I couldn’t choose just one answer. When I returned home, after much reflection (and countless miles), here’s what I realised.
Read on to find out four ways solo travel can be life-changing, exhilarating and so worth it.
1. Choose your own adventure
One of the best parts of going solo? You’re in the driver’s seat.
Fancy a sunrise hike up a volcano or a quiet day with your journal? You decide. I spent plenty of time in bed when I felt like hibernating rather than sightseeing.
And when I emerged, this freedom to do exactly what I wanted led to incredible experiences. Here are some of them:
I learned yoga and meditation while travelling, giving me clarity in my mind and balance in my body.
I cycled around Bali’s stunning rice paddies, meeting fellow adventurers along the way.
I qualified as a scuba diver in Malaysia, which later meant I could explore Australia’s dazzling Great Barrier Reef.
When you travel solo, there’s no negotiation over plans—just pure, unfiltered exploration (or relaxation, depending on your mood).

2. Connections that change you
Here’s the surprising thing about solo travel: you’re never truly alone.
Throughout my journey, I met incredible people who enriched every moment.
Fellow travellers became fast friends. Locals welcomed me with warmth. Some friendships lasted days; others, I’ve carried with me across borders and years.
When you’re solo, you naturally gravitate toward others—and they’re more open to meeting you too.
From sharing stories while watching the sunset from an exotic beach to navigating a new city together, these connections made my travels extraordinary.

3. A break from the ordinary
Travel is always an adventure, and going solo takes it up a notch.
It’s a break from routine, from the daily emails and errands. For me, it was a way to step outside my London life and discover new perspectives.
From hang-gliding over Rio de Janeiro to stargazing in the Atacama Desert, solo travel gave me the chance to be spontaneous and do things I never imagined I’d do.
The challenges along the way? They made me stronger and more self-reliant.

4. Why it’s not just about the destinations
Looking back, the landscapes and activities were incredible, but it’s the people that made it all unforgettable.
The fleeting, intense friendships. The kindness of strangers. Even brief encounters became part of my story.
And when I finally returned home?
It was comforting to know the world I’d left behind was still here, ready to welcome me back.
And now, I saw it with different eyes—grateful for both the adventures I’d had and the familiar life at home waiting for me.
Ready to take the leap?
Solo travel isn’t just for the bold or the brave. It’s for anyone who craves something more—more freedom, discovery and connection.
Whether you’re booking your first trip or your tenth, here’s your reminder: you’re more capable than you think.
