When I embarked on a road trip through Portugal a few years ago, I stumbled upon wonderful locations I'd never heard of before. Despite its growing popularity, I’ve discovered fascinating medieval towns, dramatic coastlines and areas where daily life unfolds at a gentler pace.

What is soft travel?

Soft travel means following your intuition to truly connect with a place. In Portugal, this approach feels especially natural. Its unique concept of saudade - a bittersweet longing - and its emotional fado songs encourage contemplation to enrich your journey.

As you meander through Portugal’s flower-lined streets or along the wild Atlantic coastline, you'll engage all your senses. Nothing compares to the cool touch of the blue azulejo tiles and the creamy, buttery taste of pastéis de nata.

This mindful approach changes how you experience each destination. The following seven Portuguese treasures are perfect for soft travel.

7 lesser-known wonders of Portugal

1. Tomar – where Knights Templar secrets live on

Entering the Convento de Cristo in Tomar feels like stepping through a portal into medieval Portugal. This 12th century fortress-monastery is where Knights Templar once plotted crusades and gathered in secret chambers. Ancient stone walls and sunlit cloisters create an atmosphere of timeless serenity.

2. Nazaré – for the largest surfable waves on earth

With its record-breaking 30-metre waves, Nazaré attracts elite surfers from across the globe. Yet beyond this adrenaline-fuelled fame, it preserves its character as a traditional Portuguese fishing community.

Soft travel moment: Ascend the funicular to the Miradouro do Suberco. Situated 110 metres above sea level, it gives you panoramic views. Then head to the beach to explore the natural beauty of the Forno de Orca Cave facing the famous waves.

3. Tavira – the authentic Algarve before mass tourism

Tavira is a part of the Algarve that has maintained its elegant Portuguese soul. Wandering through its streets reveals distinctive Moorish architecture and whitewashed buildings decorated with blue and white azulejos tiles. Its graceful arched Roman bridge (which isn’t actually Roman) spanning the Gilão River has been the heart of town life for centuries.

Soft travel moment: I adored taking a boat trip to Ilha de Tavira, where pristine beaches stretch for miles. For dinner, I recommend the hidden Restaurante Jorge e Lia, tucked away in a secret garden - not even all the locals know about this one.

4. Batalha – for majestic Gothic splendour

The pinnacle of Portuguese Gothic architecture has to be the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória in Batalha. Despite its UNESCO status, it receives a fraction of the visitors that flock to other Gothic monuments in Europe. The monastery contains Portugal's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, with an eternal flame commemorating the 100,000 Portuguese who died in World War I.

Soft travel moment: After exploring the monastery, grab a table at Restaurante Vintage with its stunning view of the magnificent Gothic façade. The perfect way to linger and absorb the building's grandeur with a cool glass of Portuguese vinho verde.

5. Peniche – fortress walls and fishing nets

This atmospheric peninsula town has a refreshing authenticity. Its imposing 16th-century fortress once served as a political prison during Portugal's dictatorship, while the working harbour continues to serve as the lifeblood of the community.

Soft travel moment: Wander along Peniche's dramatic coastal paths and watch local fishermen mending their nets as they've done for generations.

6. Óbidos – medieval magic within ancient walls

This perfectly preserved town is a labyrinth of cobbled lanes surrounded by ancient fortifications and dominated by a castle. Inside the historic walls, you’ll find doorways framed by cascading purple bougainvillea and artisan workshops.

Soft travel moment: I stopped at a tiny local bar to try ginjinha, the sweet cherry liqueur served in delicious edible chocolate cups by local families who have made it for generations.

7. Cabo da Roca – standing at the edge of Europe

In Portugal you can stand at the westernmost point of mainland Europe and look out at the Atlantic ocean. This dramatic clifftop has inspired Portuguese poets for centuries. The wild beauty of crashing Atlantic waves against rugged cliffs creates a landscape that feels both timeless and ever-changing.

Soft travel moment: Find a spot to connect with the elements – feeling the wind, hearing the waves and being fully present at the true edge of a continent.

The quiet poetry of Portugal

These seven destinations speak in whispers, not shouts. They exist in a Portugal where time moves differently—measured in tides, the slow ripening of olives and the rhythm of wine being poured among friends.

Spring and autumn bring fewer crowds and perfect weather for exploration. Even in the peak summer months of July and August, these corners of Portugal remain relatively peaceful compared to its more famous attractions.

I've found that this country rewards those who slow down. Allow time to linger over a meal, follow an unmarked coastal path or chat with a shopkeeper. The most meaningful memories often come from these unplanned moments.

These are simply starting points - Portugal has countless hidden gems waiting for you to discover them in your own way, as slowly and softly as you desire.

The most breathtaking yoga space I've ever experienced is the studio at Tulum’s Lula Hotel, which overlooks the Caribbean Sea.

At the heart of Ubud's thriving yoga community, The Yoga Barn is a institution set in lush green grounds.

The Loft Yoga Lounge, Auckland, New Zealand

After a long-haul flight to New Zealand, The Loft Yoga Lounge in Auckland is the perfect antidote to travel fatigue. When I discovered this place that pairs yoga with delicious food, I knew I'd found something special.

Several evenings a week they host ‘yoga and dinner’ sessions. After your class, the staff serve up a vegetarian feast, which you dine on at shared tables so you can get to know your fellow yogis. The generous portions of curries, vegetable dishes and spiced tea ensure you leave with both spirit and stomach satisfied. I came back here time and time again.

Bikram Yoga Darlinghurst, Sydney, Australia

My intense introduction to hot yoga took place at this colourful, modern studio in Sydney, Australia.

It’s a contemporary and calm place with spotlessly clean changing rooms. The teachers are passionate, friendly and they even attend each other’s classes.

I appreciated the warm welcome at reception, as they remember your name. If you’re new to hot yoga, they’ll make sure you understand the routine and feel comfortable.

Valletierra, Buenos Aires, Argentina

In Buenos Aires' trendy Palermo Soho neighbourhood, Valletierra is a welcoming space for travellers needing respite from urban exploration. Their weekly schedule of yoga and mediation sessions includes Kundalini and Iyengar classes.

I particularly loved Valletierra’s 5Rhythms dance class set to music, which I found an uplifting and liberating experience for the body and mind.

Every season of The White Lotus begins with a dead body at a luxury resort and rewinds to reveal how paradise went wrong.

While scouting locations in Thailand for season three, Mike White, the creator of this hit HBO TV show, ended up in hospital with bronchitis. It was there, drifting in and out of fever dreams, that he conceived a dark tale about death and Eastern religion.

His chosen setting? Koh Samui, Thailand's second-largest island.

I spent a week exploring this island, and discovered why it's the ideal stage for television's most twisted tropical tale.

Where decadence meets the divine

Once a backpackers' haven with basic beach huts, Koh Samui has evolved into something far more complex – and what lies under the surface of this paradise makes it fascinating.

Five-star hotels sit alongside street food vendors on Koh Samui, while meditation retreats border all-night beach parties. It's a study in contrasts – exactly the kind of tension The White Lotus thrives on.

The island's population is predominantly Buddhist, teaching that everything is impermanent and death is life's greatest teacher. Here, mortality isn't hidden away – perfect for a show that opens each season with a body count.

Nothing encapsulates this better than the surprising discovery I made at a temple there.

The mummy monk

The monk sits upright in his glass case, wearing sunglasses.

Named Luang Pho Daeng, he’s been there since 1973, when he died while meditating at age 79. Following his wishes, devotees placed his body in a glass casket at Wat Khunaram temple to inspire future generations about Buddhist teachings.

I'll never forget standing in front of him. His sunglasses – added by well-meaning followers – looked cool, though did little to disguise that this was a man who'd been dead for decades.

Just down the road, tourists were lounging on Lamai Beach's white sand, while here, a monk had turned his passing into a lesson about life.

But not all of Koh Samui's sites are so profound.

From the sacred to the silly

A short drive away at the southern tip of Lamai Beach, I climbed down the rocky coast path to see some famous rocks.

The Hin Ta and Hin Yai (Grandfather and Grandmother) rocks draw crowds for their anatomically suggestive shapes. Standing before them, it's impossible not to giggle.

Yet even these playful formations carry their own dark tale.

Legend says an elderly couple, sailing to find their son a wife, drowned in a storm and transformed into these distinctive stones as proof of their matchmaking mission.

Midnight magic

My most unforgettable Koh Samui moment wasn't in a temple or resort, but during an evening swim.

After a candlelit dinner on the beach with my then-new boyfriend, we dashed into the dark sea (fun fact: it's our 11-year anniversary today!).

As we moved through the water, something amazing happened – tiny sparks of blue-white light swirled around us. Bioluminescent plankton, turning every splash into stardust.

Like swimming through constellations. Pure magic.

On an island full of surprises, this was its most enchanting twist.

The White Lotus wave

Spring in Japan is as changeable as it is beautiful. One minute you're basking in sunshine beneath the sakura, the next, a chill reminds you it's still spring.

Location is everything. Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka warm up to around 19°C (66°F) during the day, dropping to 10°C (50°F) at night.

Up in Hokkaido, spring means 10°C (50°F) max, while Okinawa's tropical islands enjoy balmy 25°C (77°F) days—with the odd shower thrown in.

The scene: At Tokyo's Shibuya Crossing, I was ready for chaos—here, 3,000 people cross the street every two minutes. Thankfully, I’d already nailed my outfit.

What to wear: I opted for a navy polka dot jumpsuit and a light cardigan—perfect for transitioning between quiet temple visits and the busy streets. Comfortable sneakers were a must for walking, and a crossbody bag made sure my hands stayed free for the occasional Instagram shot.

Around 2.5 hours by train from Tokyo is the iconic Mount Fuji. This day trip calls for practicality with a touch of style.

The scene: Gazing at Japan’s perfect peak, we lucked out on a warm, almost cloudless afternoon with clear views of the mountain.

What to wear: I chose a simple blue vest top with khaki cargo pants, a light cardigan and comfortable sneakers for walking to the viewpoint. The local lavender ice cream matched my vest—a sweet treat against the serene backdrop.

In Kyoto, contemporary boutiques sit alongside shops selling centuries-old textiles and kimonos—this city demands elegant simplicity.

The scene: Weaving through bamboo forests and historic tea houses, pausing to admire the serene gardens.

What to wear: A knitted sweater, cargo pants and boots—practical yet chic for temple-hopping. Plus a scarf for those crisp Kyoto mornings.

What to wear in Osaka

Osaka pulses with contrasts—from historic castle views to tempting street food alleys and the neon-drenched Dotonbori district.

The scene: At Osaka Castle's peak, where modern skyline meets 16th-century fortress.

What to wear: A floral satin maxi wrap dress that channelled kimono vibes, styled with opaque tights and sneakers. Layered with a sweater and scarf for warmth, this outfit earned an unexpected compliment from an older Japanese gentleman.

What to wear in Okinawa

Okinawa feels like stepping into another world—where Japan meets tropical island life and American influences, complete with warm breezes and sudden showers.

The scene: Trading mainland city exploration for a lazy afternoon at Oodomari Beach, where island time takes over.

What to wear: A bikini under a flowing patterned cover-up to protect my pale skin from the sun. Added layered necklaces and sunglasses for that resort vibe without overdoing it.

These traditional Japanese inns offer the perfect mix of hospitality and culture—if you know how to navigate their customs.

The scene: Swapping city clothes for slippers at our peaceful ryokan, where evening tea awaited on low tables over tatami mats.

What to wear: Your room comes with a yukata—a cotton kimono-style robe that becomes your go-to outfit. Wear it while sipping tea or lounging before bed.

What to wear to a Japanese public bath

Many modern hotels have traditional Japanese public baths or onsen, with separate areas for men and women.

The scene: Everything's provided for your bathing ritual—from yukata robes and slippers for the walk there, to pyjamas for after.

What to wear: For the bath itself? No swimsuit. Absolutely nothing. In front of strangers. You'll get a small 'modesty towel' to protect your hair, but that's it.

Your coat is your winter statement piece in Paris, so choose wisely. French women invest in outerwear that works across multiple occasions – warm enough for outdoor markets, stylish enough for evening strolls and versatile enough to layer over everything. This season, it’s all about minimalist wool coats with clean lines and cosy textures that feel as good as they look.

1. Long wool coat – Your go-to for chic winter walks and evening events. This herringbone wool coat from Levi’s is warm but not bulky. Alternatively, try this divine wool-blend scarf coat from H&M or this cozy wool-blend trench from A&F.

Westhavelland Star Park, Germany

But what exactly are destination dupes, and why are they becoming a trend? Let’s delve into it.

What are destination dupes?

‘Destination dupes’ are places offering a similar vibe to popular tourist spots. But they’re less crowded and more budget-friendly.

It’s like searching online for somewhere resembling Bruges in Belgium and discovering its neighbouring city of Ghent.

With canal boat tours, a great food scene and historical architecture, Ghent is an ideal ‘dupe’. Named by Lonely Planet as Europe’s best-kept secret, it’s also far less busy than Bruges.

And this is a thing now?

That’s right. Discovering travel destination twins is this year’s latest trend.

A Skyscanner study revealed that 93% of travellers would consider a destination dupe.

As Laura Lindsay, their global travel trends expert, told Travel + Leisure:

“Hunting out these underrated alternative destinations has never been more of a priority.”

Why is it a priority?

European cities such as Paris, Lisbon, Barcelona and indeed Bruges are overloaded with tourists.

This over-tourism is accelerating the erosion of historic sites and inspiring protests from residents. Local governments are raising tourist taxes in response.

Destinations in Italy are also experiencing these issues. But, as Eric from Life Lived Italian points out in his recent (wonderful) article, the issue isn't the volume of tourists:

It’s clear we need to diversify our travel habits. So, let’s dive into other examples of ‘destination dupes’.

1. Paris, France

Paris is a dream destination, but the crowds at the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre can dampen the experience. Ahead of this year’s Paris Olympics, the French government tripled the city’s tourist tax.

Dupe in France: Lyon

While not exactly Paris, the French city of Lyon offers similar cultural richness. Having spent time in France’s second largest city, I can attest to its charm.

Go for its lively squares and world-class cuisine (it’s considered the gastronomic capital of France).

Meanwhile, Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) is a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with Renaissance buildings, scenic riverbanks and secret passageways.

For an international alternative, consider Ljubljana in Slovenia. American travel writer Rick Steves prefers Ljubljana to Paris.

Though much smaller than France’s capital, this university city is still cosmopolitan. Check out its gourmet food festival or the colourful street art in its cool Metelkova area.

Ljubljana competes on romance too, thanks to its laid-back Old Town that’s perfect for an evening stroll.

2. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon’s historic trams and panoramic miradouro viewpoints draw crowds, but tourist tuk-tuks are now clogging the roads.

Dupe in Portugal: Tavira

As Porto is also heaving with tourists, let’s consider Tavira, in the Algarve. This pretty city has a medieval castle, divine secret restaurants and relaxed riverside vibes.

A short boat ride away on Tavira Island are blissful white sand beaches, part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.

Tavira may not have miradouros, but it does have a camera obscura, where you can enjoy a unique 360-degree live view of the city from 100 meters above.

Dupe in another country: Valletta, Malta

If you’re open to another country, Valletta in Malta is a great choice. This UNESCO World Heritage City has similarly steep streets and alleys to explore.

Its 16th-century architecture shares the Baroque style found in Lisbon’s Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower.

Also like Lisbon, it has sweeping waterfront views, especially over the Grand Harbour from the Upper Barrakka Gardens.

3. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona’s Gaudí architecture, culture and beaches make it an attractive destination, but locals are protesting against the impact of this tourism.

Dupe in Spain: Valencia

As the birthplace of paella, Valencia has an impressive culinary scene and golden sandy beaches.

Go shopping in Central Market - the largest fresh food market in Europe - or sit in the Gothic Old Town sipping a glass of agua de Valencia (a cocktail made with Valencia oranges).

Thessaloniki shares Barcelona’s relaxed vibe, with waterfront views and lively nightlife. It’s a great place to discover rooftop bars and boho-chic venues. Beaches are a short drive away, notably on the Halkidiki peninsulas.

Not convinced by these dupes?

No ‘destination dupe’ can truly compare to the original. If your heart is set on visiting one of the popular tourist spots, make it an overnight stay.

Greek island favourite Santorini is surprisingly quiet once the day-trippers go, leaving hotels 30% under-capacity.

Here are more tips for visiting Europe’s best-loved places:

1. Visit during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn). For milder weather, fewer crowds and lower prices.

2. Go to popular attractions early in the morning. You’ll likely miss the masses, plus the lighting is often better for photography.

3. Avoid ‘entire place’ home rentals. They can contribute to housing shortages. Stay in a locally-run guesthouse or rent a room from a local host instead.

4. Stay outside the centre. Find a quieter area where you can support smaller guesthouses, shops and restaurants.
